"New Jersey Monthly magazine called the Chesters among the most livable places in New Jersey. The communities were named along with 20 other "great towns" in the state, including Bernardsville, Clinton and Sparta. Public safety, high-quality schools and affordable housing were among the criteria used.
The Lenni Lenape Indians were the first settlers in the area. It wasn't until 1736 that the first of the English families arrived having migrated westward from Long Island. There is some indication that these original settlers were from areas around Chester, England. In 1799, the Chesters formed their own community.
Chester continued to develop as it became a stagecoach stop between eastern New Jersey and points along the Delaware River. The area continues to stress the importance of its general physical appearance, aesthetics and infrastructure."
