"Warren Township was originally a hunting ground for the Lenni-Lenape Indians. Before the Revolution, this area was inhabited by Europeans who had lived under the Dutch, then the English government for three to four generations. In the 1700s, it consisted of the small communities of Mt. Bethel, Union Village, Smalleytown and Coontown. Warrenville had only a blacksmith shop, a wheelwright shop and a few homes. Mt. Bethel, formerly know as Galis, contained a Baptist Church, a tavern, a store and four or five homes. The Baptist minister wanted the town fathers to close the tavern because it was too near the church. The appeal was given consideration, but it was denied since the tavern had been on the hill longer than the church. Years later, the church was moved further down the hill. Coontown was comprised of a cider mill, a hat shop, two stores and a saw mill. The King George Inn, established in 1692, is thought to be the oldest landmark in this area. Being on the King's Highway, it served those traveling between Perth Amboy, Basking Ridge, Bernardsville and Morristown. The Inn was used as a stage stop, a community center and as a square-dancing spot on Saturday nights. Warren Township was formed out of Bernards Township in 1806."
